About
Eva Selig is a self-taught artist who has been creating for over 25 years. Much of her work is inspired by exploring the textural qualities of various materials including paint, canvas, paper, wood, metal, moss and clay. With a decidedly modern aesthetic, Eva creates large scale abstract pieces that are most often custom made for a particular space.
Eva holds a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and and M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. And for too many years, life got in the way of art. She fit her art in here and there, spicing things up with occasional classes and renting studio space when she could. Finally, after years of work in the world of business and full-time parenting, Eva is dedicated to creating.
"I draw my inspiration from the materials at hand. I spend a lot of time outdoors, hiking on and around Mount Tamalpais. Often I will see something -- a piece of moss or bark -- and begin to imagine it re-purposed into a new form. So very often there is an organic or natural element to my work that evokes something I have seen in nature. Using repetition and scale though, I take those organic elements and try to transform them into something decidedly modern.
Cutting, scraping, gluing, stapling, brushing, dripping, sponging; the materials dictate the technique. But in the end, I always come back to a piece over and over, editing and revising until it reaches an equilibrium that calms me.
Some of my favorite artists include Gerhard Richter, Alexander Calder, Ruth Asawa, Jean Arp, Richard Serra and Mark Grotjahn."
